AI Governance Made Simple

Project Description

Project Description

In this project for a small startup, I was given the opportunity to lead the end-to-end design of an AI governance task management flow as the sole designer. The goal was to develop an MVP of a product that simplified complex AI product management and governance workflows. I worked closely with an AI governance expert, stakeholders, and developers, and designed the key product building blocks and high-fidelity prototype to help teams stay organized, meet deadlines, and handle compliance tasks more confidently.

Hitting the ground running.

Our mission was simple but ambitious, take the stress out of AI governance so users could focus on what truly mattered: creating amazing AI products.

But then, reality hit. AI governance workflows were messy, complex, and frustrating. Product managers and AI governance specialists struggled. Without a clear tool to guide them, they risked losing time, trust, and money.

As the only designer in a small startup team, I joined with one goal, to ✨simplify the chaos✨.

Why does the AI governance feel like a maze?

Through user interviews with AI product managers and governance specialists, we uncovered a fundamental problem:

  • Governance was overwhelming, with too many moving parts to track effectively.

  • Tasks were disorganized, leading to missed deadlines and unfinished projects.

  • Teams felt overwhelmed by the sheer complexity of compliance.

Without a clear system, the risk of non-compliance could lead to lost trust, legal trouble and lost revenue.

The stakes were high, and we needed to act fast.

A blueprint for success.

Could simplifying governance be as easy as following a guide?

We proposed a solution that combined structured templates and automation:

  • Templates that provided clarity and confidence.

  • Automated steps to reduce manual effort.

  • Intuitive flows that showed only what was necessary, avoiding information overload.

This became the foundation of our approach.

How might we outcome from our sessions.

Next steps assigned based on time and feasibility.

Turning research into results.

To build the templates, I dove deep into research, brainstorming ideas with the AI governance specialist. I focused on:

  • Designing scalable templates that could evolve as the product grew.

  • Prioritizing simplicity to ensure users weren’t overwhelmed.

  • Collaborating with developers to align design and technical feasibility.

Map of the research and viable resources provided by the AI Governance Specialist.

Proposed template logic for the different kinds of tasks in question.

Small team, big challenges.

Working at a startup means working with constraints:

  • Limited developers forced us to cut back on ambitious features.

  • User testing opportunities were scarce, so we relied on feedback from conferences.

  • Accessibility improvements were postponed for future updates.

Despite these hurdles, we delivered a functional and effective beta.

Selected screens created for the dashboard and template for the AI governance.

So,did it work?

Beta users responded positively. The templates reduced complexity, provided much-needed structure, and gave teams confidence in tackling compliance workflows.

Though the product wasn’t launched due to technical hurdles, the feedback confirmed we were on the right track.

What I learnt along the way.

Constraints often lead to the most creative solutions.

Collaboration and clear communication are critical to success.

Simplicity isn't just a design choice but a necessary step to solve complex problems.

and a whole lot about AI Products and Governance :)
